A roundup of artful ideas…

A roundup of artful ideas…

This past weekend, we repaid a visit to the sweet vintage shop, Penny Lane, where I found some art to hang in my home.  I purchased two Cavallini & Co. papers to frame, one for my main bathroom and another for one of my girls’ rooms.  We also purchased a few items for the shop and ogled a pull-down school map that was hanging in the front window for awhile but left it behind.  I wonder if we will regret that one.  It’s probably not that much of a surprise that my favourite art is vintage.  Old maps make quite a statement.  And if I were to ever come across a quirky portrait of some old soul, I probably couldn’t walk away from it.  Victoria , from sfgirlbybay, has a wall of quirky portraits that I dream about.  Books that are falling at the seams still have something to offer, sometimes  they are filled with lovely full colour illustrations.  Lily has a few walls in her home that are to die for and if you find yourself wondering where to start with your own wall of art, I’ve found a variety of sources, just for you.  These are my favourites.  Some are vintage and some are modern.

Geninne’s work is inspired by the nature she is surrounded by and the results are vibrant and detailed.  And of course, we have a thing for birds.

Thrift stores and antique malls are great sources for art with personality but it might require some patience as you wait for that perfect piece.  Etsy, on the otherhand, has loads of art to choose from.  Besides the fact that you will be able to find something unique, the price is usual easy to handle.  New and old, this is plenty to choose from, almost too much.  Here are some of my favourite vintage pieces.

1. paint by number 2. oil painting 3. print

1. floor plan 2. photograph 3. sheet music

1. paint by number 2. print 3. botanical 4. book page

A combination of old and new, Cartolina is another source for wonderfully vibrant and colourful prints and stationary very worthy of framing.

For those who prefer a more modern look, photographs will surely add some colour to your walls.  Raceytay, has a large selection of fine photographic prints which happen to be 35% off right now.  All her photographs are soft and dreamy and I had trouble choosing just four.

I would love a big bold print like this vintage Peugeot advertisement in my living room.  An effective way to fill a wall and create some impact.  Vintage posters aren’t the most economical route to take but CanvasPop might be an affordable alternative.  You can upload your own image and have it stretched on canvas for much less.  Vintage Printables has an extensive collection of copyright free images for you to download at your leisure.  Just send it through your home printer or for a higher quality image, try your local office supply.

Art comes in many forms so think outside the box if you are looking for something unique.  Labelstone has an extensive collection of vintage fruit box labels and would add a little fun to a rustic look or a child’s bedroom or play space.

Farouche is Etsy seller we have featured once or twice before but I just can’t enough of the bubble gum colours and words to live by.  It’s always nice to be reminded to start the day off right.  If you love Farouche as much as we do, you will get 25% off your order, just in time for Spring.

If you are looking for frames, my favourite source for frames so far has been Ikea.  I like their simple and sturdy designs that are easy on the pocket book.  Another alternative is to paint old frames a complimentary colour.  Lily has a good example in her girls’ room.

Do you have a wall of art you’d like to share?  We’d love to see it.
