I have plenty of fond memories playing outdoors as a child.  We were lucky enough to live near forests, fields and bush and we wandered freely as long as we were home in time for dinner.  We also picnicked, canoed, hiked and camped as a family which was always fun.

Playtime outside is so important and I certainly notice it when my girls haven’t spent enough time in the fresh air.  They sleep better, eat better and are the happiest when they’ve reached their outdoor quota.  We are blessed to live next to a ravine and in the past 6 months, they’ve grown brave enough to explore it and lose themselves in their play.

One day, sooner than later, I would love for them to have some sort of fort down there but they’ve never actually asked for it.  What do you think of these?

For now, a sheet and some clothespins will have to do and I’m guessing just as much fun.

My girls were just “oohing” and “ahhing” looking at these…we’re definitely in need of a fort of some sort over here as well! ~Lily

I grew up on a farm so roaming around the back trees was such a hit with us. I think it gives children a sense of adventure, and a long the way they no doubt have fun, but learn some great outdoor skills. We had a tree house in our back trees, and it was so fun!

I love all the forts you posted!

The playhouses are fun and look cute but the kids really don’t care. All they need is something to make a house. We have a simple wooden playhouse in our backyard. It has a wooden playkitchen and a table and 2 chairs. But my kids still love to pop up a tent or build their own fort with blankets and tables. I think the fancy playhouses are more for the parents than the kids. Let them build their own…

I completely agree with you, Sabine. :) They outgrow the “playhouse” stage far too quickly for me to fork out a tonne of money, let alone $250,000. for a playhouse when a blanket will do just fine. There are still fun, though.
