Yesterday I had a bit of a panic attack when I did the math and realized that Christmas is way closer than I thought.  Eek!  But instead of freaking out like I do almost every year, I made the decision to just keep it simple.  It helps that I’m being forced to with our big move to Florida.  I’m downsizing, like crazy.  I’ve never been one to have a lot or need a lot and clutter drives me nuts.  Since having kids it seems like the “things” around our house have just got out of control.  The girls usually get so much for Christmas that they don’t really play with anything.  Nothing shines out as that “special” toy they’ve been anticipating since the Sears Christmas Wish Book came out in August.  It’s important to have that anticipation and a focus more on quality rather than quantity.  So, this Christmas my motto is “keep it simple”…a socially and environmentally responsible approach.  Phew.  That felt good to get off my chest.  In keeping with the theme of quality rather than quantity, I’d like to introduce to you, Bookhou.  John and Arounna know how to keep things simple and how wonderful is it that they are able to make beautiful and useful things together.  And they happen to be Canadian, eh.

If you’d like to see more of their lovely creations, stop by their Etsy shop.  You won’t be disappointed.  Cheers!

These are so beautiful. I can’t wait to see what you’re going to get the kiddos for christmas! My parents had a similar approach with us when growing up and I think it worked well. While all my friends got tons and tons of gifts, we only got one big thing and a few small items {ie. books}. I think it taught us to see Christmas for what it really was…a time to spend together as family, reflect on the year and enjoy movies snuggled on the couch.

Amen. I’ve heard of “Santa” bringing something to play with, something to read and something to wear. It’s nice to have some sort of focus rather than buying willy nilly.

I couldn’t agree with you more, Rachel! I’m trying to focus on being creative and DIY-y this year, but at the same time not load people down with things they won’t use or love. And thank you for the introduction to John and Arounna! Their things truly are lovely…
